Carole Lombard, circa 1937

Clark Gable's favorite photo of Carole Lombard was kept in his MGM dressing room for years with a single red rose in a bud vase. It didn't stop Lana, of course.

  1. Loving your colorizations of Carole. (I need to feature them again on my sidebar so they aren't missed)
Her hair looks more ash blonde. I always imagine her hair as a light blonde although not Harlow platinum. Was this her natural color if you know?

I hope things are well down your way.
We'll have to catch up soon.

  2. Thanks, Page!

Her natural color had a tiny bit more red in it than this -- the way she appears in "Nothing Sacred" (reddish blonde) is her actual, true color. She rarely deviated from it except for a brief stint as a brunette circa 1925, and a longer one during the early 1930s when she switched to a very light, near platinum shade.

In her films, it was usually dependent on how she was lit, too. In "My Man Godfrey" her hair is so dark it appears brown.

  3. Thanks for the info. Now that I think about it, I have seen her with varying shades throughout her career. (like most stars who were swayed to lighten or darken depending on the role) I have a couple photos of her in hats with very dark hair that must have been during the early 20s then. And I've seen a few old hand tinted postcards where her hair had that red tinge.
